    Betty B. Derig has a master's in U.S. history from the University of Montana. She has written numerous articles and four books on western history. Derig, an avid gardener, is a member of the Idaho Native Plant Society. Her love for the West's varied terrain, from its deserts to its evergreen forest, led her to team up with a natural history buff to write this book. Both authors reside in Weiser, Idaho.

    Margaret C. Fuller has a biology degree from Stanford University and is a freelance writer. She is the author of six books and numerous articles on outdoor activities and mountain ecology. a seasoned hiker and photographer, she has logged more than 5,000 miles of trail, presented more than 200 slide shows, and thought workshops on backpacking and ecology.
